Summer should be one of the happiest and most formative times in a child’s life. It’s a season for exploring new interests, making friends, building confidence, and discovering talents that may not emerge during the school year. It should be a time not only of fun, but also of intellectual and personal growth.
Every child deserves that opportunity. Yet for many children in New York City, the summer months offer far fewer chances to learn, explore, and grow. Without access to enriching programs, students can lose much of the academic momentum they built during the school year. More importantly, they miss opportunities to develop curiosity, creativity, and the confidence that comes from trying something new.
That’s why Summer Rising is such an important part of Educational Alliance’s work.
The Summer Rising programs provide far more than free childcare and nutritious meals. They create an environment where children continue learning while experiencing the joy of summer.
Each morning begins with academic work in reading and math, helping students return to school in the fall ready to succeed. In the afternoons, they dive into hands-on enrichment activities that awaken curiosity, from building solar-powered cars in science electives to arts and crafts, dance classes, and field trips to places like the Bronx Zoo. This summer, some campers are also participating in a special swimming program, giving them the opportunity to learn a skill that can last a lifetime.
It’s inspiring to see these children so full of excitement and possibility. They’re learning, making friends, discovering new interests, and creating the kinds of summer memories every child deserves.
